Fierce Winds Cause Numerous Homes Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens advised to avoid going out as powerful gusts batter the country.

Intense gales attaining speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in approximately 90,000 properties lacking electricity and led officials to halt over 100 flights, as reported by local media.

These gusts are impacting the entire South Island and southern parts of the North Island, according to the country's meteorological service.

The nation's agencies have announced infrequent severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas such as Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been advised to avoid going outside, avoid travel, and get ready for further power and communication outages.

Widespread Impact and Emergency Response

The power cut appears to be affecting residences predominantly in the southern region, although authorities state that power was being slowly brought back.

Local media have reported that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, and utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gales.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was recorded in a popular vehicle recording.

Flights entering and leaving the metropolis have been cancelled because of the weather, and certain highways and community centers are not operating.

At the same time Canterbury officials have announced a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.

Strike Action Alongside Harsh Weather

The powerful gales on this day occur while tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants are engaged in what has been termed a "significant labor action", requesting improved salaries and workplace environments.

However the extreme weather has compelled them to modify some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies shifted to interior venues or abandoned.

Comparable winds are affecting the neighboring country, ushering in a heatwave to the country's outback.

Authorities have declared burning restrictions for fear of bushfires.
