Football Association of Ireland Passes Motion Calling for Uefa Ban on Israel
Ireland's football governing body has voted in favor to present a formal motion to Uefa, calling for the exclusion of Israeli football from all European team and national competitions.
Basis of the Recommended Ban
This motion, which was put forward by Irish side Bohemians, cited claimed violations by the IFA of a couple of key Uefa statutes.
- Inability to implement and enforce an effective policy against racism.
- Organisation of football teams in disputed territories without the approval of the Palestrian FA.
Vote Outcome and Future Actions
According to an announcement from the FAI, the proposal was backed by 74 votes, with 7 against and two not voting.
They plans to officially present this motion to the UEFA's decision-making body, asking for the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from Uefa competitions.
In an extraordinary general meeting of the FAI, an standard motion was posed to members. It was approved by a majority.
Previous Uefa Considerations
Uefa had previously put on hold intentions to exclude Israel at the end of September, following the announcement of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the area.
While Uefa never publicly stated considering an extraordinary meeting on the matter, preparations were believed to be quite advanced.
International Backdrop
This Irish resolution comes after similar calls in last autumn from the leaders of both Turkey and Norway's football associations for banning Israel from global football.
Those requests were issued after United Nations experts asked world and European football bodies to ban Israel, referencing a UN investigation that claimed Israel of committing genocide during the war in Gaza.
Israel has rejected these claims and labeled the findings as outrageous.
Potential Ramifications
If European football's authority choose to suspend Israel, it would probably create tension with the United States government – co-hosts for the 2026 World Cup – which is firmly against such an action.
Although the European body has the power to exclude Israeli teams from European competitions, it may not be able to stop them from taking part in World Cup qualifiers, which falls under Fifa.
