New Year Revelers Urged to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Expected Across the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a chilly start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Warnings
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the weather service.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and good visibility. The mercury are forecast to be cold, making extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on public transport.
Temperatures Forecast to Fall Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Alerts Activated
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities explained this meant the weather could to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
