Rare Crimson Electrical Discharge Captured in Skies
A team of image specialists based in the island nation have recorded visual evidence of red lightning, counted as the rarest celestial events on Earth, during which bright red bursts manifest in the sky.
An Unforgettable Night of Discovery
The imaging specialists had originally set out to photograph the Milky Way over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the South Island of the country on 11 October, and unexpectedly witnessed the extraordinary event.
They thought they would be fortunate to get clear skies that night, but their shooting session became “a truly memorable experience,” a team member commented.
Upon examining his files for a Milky Way panorama and found he had captured red sprites,” the photographer said. “The discovery was astounding – there was a whole bunch of joyful noises and numerous expressions in the night.”
Explaining Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are electrical discharges in the mesosphere, caused by storm systems. In contrast to lightning that shoots towards the surface, these events ascend towards the higher altitudes, creating structures that look like vertical forms, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The initial image of a this phenomenon was captured – by chance – in the late eighties, by a team at the University of Minnesota.
Fleeting and Dreamlike Sightings
The phenomena last for such a short time – lasting just a millisecond – that they are infrequently observed to the human sight, but a team member had a lucky break. “By chance, I was gazing right at a sprite when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence viewing the appropriate section of the heavens and I observed a momentary scarlet burst,” he commented.
Observing the phenomena was a aspiration for the photographer, an award-winning dark sky artist. “It seems that you are observing an unreal vision, it appears mystical … there is an intense scarlet hue that is present only momentarily, so it’s really interesting to witness.”
Technical and Artistic Mastery
Recording a red sprite demands a proficiency with specialized camera skills, as well as an familiarity with atmospheric physics and artistic vision, the individual stated. “This is a highly complex form of imaging that’s very rewarding as well.”
A different team member said it was counted as the “most extraordinary nights” of his career. “I was able to observe the starry river shining above the horizon while these giant scarlet filaments of energy moved above a electrical event far on the horizon,” he explained.
An Exceptional Photographic Achievement
As far as he knows, there are no further recordings capturing scarlet electrical bursts and the galactic core from the southern perspective in a single image.
“It represented a unique instance when you understand you are observing an event you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
