Our team is verifying images and video shared this morning that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the images were from relied on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
