UK Expands Methanol Poisoning Advisory Roster with An additional 11 Countries
British government has placed 11 new countries to its public warning list about the dangers of toxic alcohol poisoning from tainted beverages.
The expanded advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "an international surge in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of methanol poisoning.
Just a few weeks ago, the government had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, after a number of serious cases like the tragic demise of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can cause blindness or death within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?
Methanol is a poisonous chemical commonly used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for ingestion.
While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of beverages, reputable manufacturers lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the distillation process.
However in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to save money, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.
Government Advice for Tourists
Foreign Office official a senior official said that every traveler should be aware of the indicators of methanol poisoning.
"If you're drinking spirits overseas, stick to well-known venues and avoid homemade alcohol or free shots," Falconer warned.
"If something feels off, such as a hangover that's far more intense than usual or sight issues ā seek medical attention immediately."
The entire list of destinations noted as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
