The Leader's remarkably clear shift on the UK's post-Brexit relations to the bloc recently was intended to send a message to the business community, to Brussels, and to other European capitals, alongside his political supporters.

Commercial Demands

A prominent industry organisation last month released a list of further requests in different fields to help exporters deal with post-Brexit red tape that has hampered the export of products.

Its own survey indicated that a significant number of business members agreed that the current arrangement was not helping commercial success.

A host of further domains could, feasibly, see a comparable strategy – alignment with single market rules – in exchange for reducing post-Brexit barriers across production, in vehicles, chemicals, or for example in value-added tax systems.

EU Perception

European capitals were underwhelmed by the lack of ambition in the previous recalibration, specifically the British rejection of proposals floated by some experts regarding the simplified access of UK products to the internal market.

The specific detail on power sharing and agri-food rules is yet to be finalised. A plan for UK companies to be participate in a €150bn security initiative has stalled over the cost of the membership fee, after opposition from the French government. a non-EU country has joined the scheme.

The UK has concluded arrangements to return to a academic exchange programme and to further negotiate a youth mobility program. This has paved the way for ongoing dialogue.

Some UK insiders suggest that the issuing of a American national security strategy has shifted the backdrop on UK ties to the EU.

The paper said that the US would "encourage pushback" to Europe's current trajectory and applauded the "increasing clout" of certain political parties.

In government circles, there is a growing awareness that the rapidly changing world has evolved further.

Domestic Pressures

At home, the administration also foresees being pressured on EU relations not just one opposition party, but potentially others, which is targeting its key electoral areas in upcoming council elections.
