Strong winter winds brought walls down onto fragile tents sheltering people uprooted by war in Gaza, killing no fewer than four individuals. These deaths highlights the perilous situation that persist after over two years of intense airstrikes and critical shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Offers Little Relief from Severe Elements

Although a ceasefire has been in effect from last fall, humanitarian organizations state that Palestinians broadly lack the sufficient housing necessary to withstand frequent winter storms.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the victims, said on Tuesday that the dead were two women, a young female, and a man.

In a separate incident, the local health authority announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold during the night.

"International actors has enabled us to experience death in all its forms," stated a family member after the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three people of a one household — elderly a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an eight-metre high wall fell onto their dwelling in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 others were hurt in the event.

Their relatives on that day started removing the rubble that had entombed their family and rebuilding the tent shelters for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothing as well as food and hygiene items throughout Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population live in improvised tents because their houses were turned into rubble over the course of the war. Aid groups say an insufficient amount of building supplies are reaching Gaza during the ceasefire.

Casualty Figures Since the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the administration, says over four hundred and forty individuals have been killed by gunfire and their remains brought to hospitals after the truce went into effect. The authority maintains detailed casualty data that are seen as largely accurate by UN agencies and independent experts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on that day that at least one hundred minors under the age of 18 – 60 males and 40 girls – had been killed since the truce began due to military operations, including drone strikes, airstrikes, artillery fire and use of bullets. Those figures, he said, represented incidents where enough details had been compiled to justify documentation, but the total toll is believed to be higher. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"While 'bombings and shootings have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," the spokesperson informed reporters at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "So what the international community now terms calm would be considered a crisis in any other place," he said.

Third Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of over two million individuals has been fighting to keep the cold weather and bad weather at bay while enduring shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is badly required throughout the colder season. This marks the 3rd winter after the conflict between Israel and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked southern Israel and murdered around 1,200 individuals and abducted 251 others into Gaza.
